Winter season in the lagoon
I spent amost a months time in the area, only in the winter season, so my review is maybe only valid for the same period
.
Kalpitiya lagoon is a fairly big lagoon with about 10-12 schools along the shore, which means as an advanced rider you will probably find free place for yourself to ride. On really busy days it could be tough to be a beginner in this spot.
Usually you will see recommendations about this lagoon as waist deep, but that's not entirely true. About 1/3 of the lagoon is like that, 1/3 is around 2m deep and the last third is basicly not used by most of the people as it's muddy and full of shells, nasty plants and sometimes jellyfish.
Not to be afraid though, it could be still okay if you are not crashing on every corner, but there is a reason not many school comes here to teach.
In overall, i didn't really like this spot to kite, but this is my opinion based on my skills. If you are a beginner/advancedish kiter, who is not really familiar with open sea spots or afraid of waves, and chops then this place is still perfect for you around here, but you will have to put up with the daily transport, eating on the spot and for most schools coming from outside the lagoon a bit poor infrastructure, meaning you have shade, water, occasionally coffee or beer, as well as local traders may come and go with coconuts, icecream, pastries, but it's not classic beach bars, more like shacks.
Apart from all these, i can still recommend this spot to anyone planning to do a kite holiday in Sri Lanka, it would be foolish to skip the lagoon, and as a beginner, it's still probably the best place around to learn and progress.
